Laser welding is a cutting-edge technology for joining a wide range of materials with high speed and quality, reduced downtime and good reliability. Thus it is well appropriate for high volume applications such as automotive industry, pipes, ducts, compressor housings, air tanks…

It can be adapted to non-stop welding process, where its accuracy, reliability and repeatability provide decisive advantages compared to traditional arc-welding processes.

The laser beam provides a concentrated heat source, with very high power density, allowing for narrow, deep welds and high welding rates in many types of materials :  mild steels, carbon steels, stainless steel, aluminum, and titanium, or even zinc-coated steels.

Thanks to the reduced amount of heat tranferred to the workpiece, laser welding also reduces distortions and heat-affected zones close to the weld seam. It produces very smooth weld bead, without any reinforcement, like GTAW welding process, and gives also possibility to introduce filler wire when application requires it.

Laser-hybrid welding, combines the laser beam with an arc welding method . This combination allows for greater positioning flexibility, since GMAW supplies molten metal to fill the joint, and due to the use of a laser, increases the welding speed over what is normally possible with GMAW.

According to the application and the required laser power, many types of sources may be suitable : CO2 laser, fiber laser, diode laser, or disc laser. For each of them, spot size, safety devices, and machine design have to be adapted for optimal use of the laser beam and maximal performance in terms of production rate and weld beam quality.
